Wappingers board adopts 2026–27 goals focused on attendance, early childhood learning and board accountability

The Wappingers Central School District Board of Education unanimously adopted its 2026–27 district-level and board-level goals after a presentation by the board goal subcommittee.
Board member Mr. Pappalardo, who led the subcommittee report, said the committee focused on two main priorities: measurable strategies to improve student and educator attendance and strengthening professional development aligned to building-level needs. He said the board will prioritize early childhood learning by overseeing initiatives to improve school readiness for pre-K through grade 2 and will receive periodic reports on key indicators.
"The board will strengthen standards and protocols through existing policies to enhance quality of education and foster a positive learning and working environment for all students and staff," Mr. Pappalardo said. He added the subcommittee sought to avoid "comfort and complacency" and to hold the board itself accountable for professional growth.
Other board members noted that past goals had largely been met and that the newly adopted items will be monitored as the district’s baseline moves forward. The board discussed using board retreats and professional development to support the goals and confirmed that previously achieved goals would remain part of the district’s ongoing monitoring even if they are not the focus for the coming year.
The motion to adopt the goals passed by unanimous vote.
Next steps: the board will receive periodic reports and use retreats and professional-development resources to support implementation.
