Staff to present Blackwood Farms monument options; HRC told attendance rule will be enforced

County staff told the Human Relations Commission on Feb. 24 that the Office of Civil Rights and Civic Life will present final quote selections and pricing for a Blackwood Farms monument at the March HRC meeting and will handle fabrication and scheduling if the commission approves a design.
Paul Slack, Chief Civil Rights Officer, and Courtney McLaughlin, Community Engagement & Outreach Coordinator, explained that OCRCL will take the commission’s vote on the final options and then manage the procurement, fabrication and placement timeline. No dollar amounts were provided in the minutes; staff said OCRCL will handle any fiscal details and approvals.
Staff also reported an update to the Board of County Commissioners policy affecting HRC attendance: any member who misses three meetings within a 12-month period will be terminated from their position on the board. The minutes record the policy change but do not name any individual currently at risk of termination.
Mr. Slack and Ms. McLaughlin outlined accessibility priorities for OCRCL-supported events, noting ADA and language access are high priorities and that ASL and other language services are available for programming. The staff presentation emphasized that OCRCL will approve organizations and speakers for HRC events and coordinate visibility, surveys and post-event follow-up.
The commission did not take a final vote on the monument at this meeting; staff indicated a vote on final options would occur at the March meeting when quotes and pricing are presented.
