Orange County HRC approves three new members, sets spring events

The Orange County Human Relations Commission voted Feb. 24 to approve applications for Cassie Rice, Andrew Drain and Brandon Loor Intriago, filling part of the commission’s vacancies after a recent resignation.
Jenn Sykes moved to approve the three applicants, and Commissioner Shane Lukas seconded. The motion passed with four votes in favor and one abstention; individual votes were not recorded in the minutes.
The commission discussed spring programming tied to the Pauli Murray Awards on May 17, for which Jesse Huddleston is scheduled as speaker, and a Raise Your Voice Youth Summit on March 3 featuring Hannah Preston of Influence NC. The commission will choose a Community Champion based on posters completed at the March 3 event and announce the winner at the Pauli Murray Awards.
Action items recorded included selecting the Community Champion (assigned to the HRC, due before the Pauli Murray Awards) and drafting an Arab American Heritage Month proclamation (assigned to Commissioner Jenn Sykes, due March 7, 2026). Staff confirmed OCRCL will handle bookings, visibility and fiscal details for events.
The approvals address part of a roster shortfall: minutes note that Commissioner Krista Caraway resigned, leaving five vacancies on the commission. The HRC discussed outreach and new-member recruitment at the meeting and tabled partnership outreach pending subcommittee work.
The commission also reviewed plans for public outreach at community events, including tabling at Hog Day and the Mildred Council Community Dinner, to increase visibility and recruitment.
