Everett trustees note $34,000 federal grant for tribal students and remind public about ‘Stuff the Bus’ volunteer week

Board members used their July 1 comments to highlight community programs and a small federal grant for tribal students.
A board member identified as Charles said the district was awarded a $34,000 formula grant from the Federal Office of Indian Education to support tribal students and families, and thanked staff (Dr. Saltzman and Dr. Botton were named) for securing the award. Charles said more than 100 families completed the district’s 506 forms needed to access services tied to the grant.
Director Langley noted the Jackson Elementary replacement project remains on track to open for the first day of school and reminded the public that Everett School District’s annual Stuff the Bus event will run Aug. 14–18; volunteers and donations are encouraged at local grocery stores and online. Director Langley praised the Everett Public Schools Foundation’s role in the volunteer event and urged community participation.
Director Jackson Lawrence raised concern about rising insurance costs and urged the state legislature to fully fund the district through MSOC to avoid using general-fund dollars intended for classrooms and staff. Trustees discussed the insurance issue further in the budget presentation that followed.
The district reported no public comments at this meeting.
