Parks committee reports $350,000 in unexpected funds; council discusses sidewalks, shade and city entry signs

At the July 1 meeting Mrs. Cooper reported the parks committee received unexpected additional funding from state sources and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources totaling about $350,000. The committee discussed potential uses including a sidewalk on the south side of Cherry Street (from J.R. Smith to Otis), shade structures, playground equipment, water fountains, security improvements, signage and an entrance feature.
"We got some additional funding from ODNR that we weren't expecting. So that came to about $350,000 extra monies," Mrs. Cooper said, and the committee is reviewing which items previously removed from the plan could be restored.
Council also discussed a set of new signs for parks, municipal buildings and entry signs into the city; staff noted options and scale considerations for entry signs that include masonry features and recommended prioritizing which signs to build.
The city arborist will prepare a presentation for a future meeting about invasive species and planting recommendations at Old Orchard Park. Council directed staff to continue refining design options and return with more detailed proposals for how to allocate the additional funds.
Next steps: parks staff will develop a prioritized list of proposed uses and cost estimates for council review.
