Township authorizes emergency work to repair collapsed Valley Road storm sewer

The Public Works Committee authorized township staff on Wednesday to coordinate with the township engineer to develop survey and scope documents and to obtain informal contractor quotes for emergency replacement of a collapsed terracotta storm sewer on Valley Road between Route 611 and North 12th Street.
Kyle (Public Works) explained the pipe has collapsed in the middle, causing the street surface to open and wash material into the drainage, making temporary in‑house repairs inadequate. ‘‘It is completely collapsed in the middle,’’ he said, describing progressive scour that is worsening with heavy rain.
Samantha Brinker said the township previously received a grant to address this work and staff intends to direct that grant toward the most compromised segment once a scope is defined. She also said the emergency repair authorization will allow staff to expedite contractor selection; an exact cost estimate will follow after the survey and scope are completed.
Commissioners voted to authorize the engineer to complete design and obtain quotes under emergency repair procedures so the township can move quickly to repair the undermined roadway.
