Lamont Community Center renovation bid goes live; staff anticipates contractor selection this summer

The Cheltenham Township Public Works Committee on Wednesday said the Lamont Community Center renovation project is now out for bid and staff expects to review proposals in August.
Drew Lavine, representing the project team, told commissioners that bids are expected to be due by July 31 and that the team aims to bring a recommendation to the board’s August agenda. If the procurement and contractor vetting proceed on schedule, he said, the township expects to issue a notice to proceed in late September and target substantial completion around Oct. 15 — timing that could be adjusted to coordinate with a ribbon‑cutting or certificate of occupancy.
Eric Gianelli and other members of the design and construction team said they intentionally avoided starting heavy construction in the height of summer to reduce competition for labor with school‑related projects. ‘‘We wanted to give contractors a little time coming out of that summer work from all the public schools,’’ a member of the team said, adding that the decision should encourage stronger competition and better pricing.
Project staff said the bid package is substantial — approaching 1,300 pages of specifications and drawings — and encouraged contractors and subcontractors to register on the township’s procurement portal to receive notices and bid documents. The team said they will monitor incoming bids and then coordinate with the township to schedule a groundbreaking and community outreach once a contractor is selected.
The committee did not take any final contract action Wednesday; the announcement was limited to the procurement schedule and expected milestones.
