Town letter halts relocation MOU for Confederate monument; Chowan requests joint meeting with Edenton

County Attorney Lauren Arizaga-Womble told the Board on Feb. 3 that the Town of Edenton sent a letter indicating the consent order required under the November 2024 memorandum of understanding (MOU) was rejected by plaintiffs, meaning the Town cannot perform under the MOU to relocate the Confederate monument to county property.
Arizaga-Womble recommended the board accept the letter and suggested scheduling a joint meeting with the Town Council that would provide for public comment because members of the public have asked to speak on the issue. Commissioner Tony Shaffer moved to accept the letter and direct counsel to engage with the Town to schedule a joint meeting; the motion passed unanimously (6-0).
Arizaga-Womble told commissioners that because the consent order was rejected, the Town is currently unable to complete the actions required by the MOU. She said she would contact the Town and that the Clerk would follow up to set a date for a joint meeting. The board did not take further action on relocation at the Feb. 3 meeting.
