Principals report generally positive school climate, flag social exclusion at middle school

Meaghan Wakely (Brooklyn Elementary assistant principal) and Amy Golas (Brooklyn Middle assistant principal) presented annual school‑climate reports at the May 27 board meeting.
Wakely said Brooklyn Elementary’s School Climate Committee — which includes teachers, support staff, paraeducators, administrators and the superintendent — reviewed survey results showing that students, staff and families generally feel safe, respected and connected. She identified areas for continued growth including conflict resolution, peer relationships and student engagement.
Golas said Brooklyn Middle School’s results were similar on safety and respect but noted social exclusion as a primary area for improvement. Both administrators described initiatives implemented during the year: social‑emotional learning programming, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), restorative practices, student leadership opportunities and improvements to behavior data collection and reporting. The board thanked the administrators for the presentation.
