County awards $599,736 low bid to ICON Structures for East Yard salt storage building

Sedgwick County's Board of Bids and Contracts voted July 2 to accept the low bid from ICON Structures Incorporated, $599,736, for construction documents and work for a new salt storage building at the East Yard. A presenter read an engineer's estimate of $796,463 and described the project as a pre-engineered metal building with site work, stem walls, lighting and a concrete ramp for loading salt into trucks.
The presenter said the approximately 5,000-square-foot facility will stockpile salt for road operations during snow and ice events and that the existing wood salt building is more than 40 years old and has exceeded its useful life. "The facility is outdated, undersized for current salt storage and handling needs, and lacks adequate illumination for nighttime operations," the presenter said.
A board member moved to accept the low bid and another seconded. The motion passed by roll call: Tim Myers, Brandy Bailey, Philip DeBold and Corey Stokes voted aye. The contract award allows Public Works to proceed with permitting and construction procurement with ICON Structures.
