A board member asked whether the district could survey parents of magnet-school students to learn whether they select magnet options for program fit or other reasons. Patrick said the district likely has students'names and physical addresses and may have email addresses for some families; he said staff will research options for contacting magnet families and follow up. "One thing I'm not sure is we have their email addresses because it's not something they're required to provide," he said.
Board discussion also touched on homeschooling: members noted that homeschool counts rose during COVID and asked what reporting obligations exist. Staff summarized current practice: districts receive notice that a child is being homeschooled, and members said state-level reporting and oversight may be subject to legislative changes, which could place more obligations on local districts.
The board asked staff to research contact methods for magnet families and to monitor pending state changes related to homeschooling oversight.
