Orleans select board adds associate seats to veterans committee, appoints two members

Melissa Phillips introduced herself during the meeting and described Coast Guard Reserve service and maritime experience. "My name is Melissa Phillips and I'm interested in serving on the veterans committee for the town of Orleans," she told the board before members moved and seconded her appointment; the board confirmed her for a term ending June 30, 2029, and instructed her to complete swearing-in paperwork.
Later in the meeting the board appointed Alan Chase to an associate member seat after he described a 24-year Navy career and local ties. "I'm Alan Chase," he said in introducing himself. The board moved and seconded his appointment to a term ending June 30, 2029.
The session also addressed reappointments to other advisory bodies. Rich Levy was reappointed to the Marine & Freshwater Quality Committee for one year after a divided vote (3-2) in which members debated sticking to term-limit rotation versus retaining continuity for ongoing regulatory-monitoring work. Select Board members approved one-year reappointments for Sharon Basso and Tracy Murphy to the Recreation Advisory Committee by a 4-1 vote, citing continuity for a multi‑million‑dollar Elders Park project.
The board handled other committee housekeeping at the same meeting, moving several consent-agenda appointments and reappointments forward and thanking outgoing volunteers for their service. The board concluded the item and proceeded with other business.
The Veterans Committee amendments were described by members as a modest structural change intended to broaden participation; board clerks provided next steps for new appointees to be sworn in and included in committee rosters.
