Waynetown council approves vacating 12-foot platted alley; motion passes 3-1

The Waynetown Town Council voted 3-1 on Aug. 13 to vacate a 12‑foot platted alley running between 206 S Vine and 106 W Garfield.
Resident David Meihls, who told the council he purchased 206 S Vine, said the alley is not driven on and contains a utility pole and a security light that serve nearby houses. Meihls said he had contacted Davis Electric for estimates to run electric underground for the three affected houses and understood he would pay the cost himself.
Randy Phillips moved to vacate the alley and Barry Lewis seconded. Councilor Doug Harris voted against the motion, saying he was reluctant to remove alleys because they can serve future infrastructure needs such as water lines. Council President Bob Cox confirmed that vacating the platted alley transfers the property to adjacent owners and that the town would not retain a right-of-way for that strip.
The motion passed with a 3-1 tally; councilors noted the property would be split between both owners and discussed possible future needs for utility or water-line access.
What’s next: Meihls will pursue undergrounding the electric service as discussed; the council did not attach additional conditions in the public discussion recorded at the meeting.
