Council directs staff to study rules for shipping-container and tiny-home use

The chair said he envisions converted containers with windows and doors that meet building standards rather than ad-hoc placements. "I'm envisioning something that has windows and doors and, again, meets the building standards and codes," the chair said, urging staff to bring images and example standards for future consideration. Council members emphasized reliance on staff analysis of building codes, definitions (for example what constitutes a tiny home), and appropriate locations such as near Mission Trail for design-sensitive placements.
Council approved the motion to have staff return with research and recommended language; the item is advisory and does not change current code. Staff signaled they will compile options, images and code language for later council consideration.
