The Socorro City Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing submission of a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department local park grant for Socorro Parks Improvements Phase 1 and approving a required 50% local match.
A grants department presenter described three parks targeted for improvements—Amistad Park, Callisto Park and Jardin De Flores Park—and outlined proposed upgrades including ADA-accessible parking and play areas, shade structures, walking trails, playground equipment, irrigation upgrades and athletic facilities. "We have identified 3 parks for improvements through this grant opportunity," the presenter said, noting conceptual layouts and images were shown to the council.
The project budget was estimated at approximately $1,500,000, with the grant covering $750,000 and the city's match of $750,000 to be funded from certificates of obligation already budgeted. The presenter said the city would submit the grant application in August and expects construction to begin next fall if the grant is awarded. Staff also said they will gather community feedback via a survey and by outreach at the July 4 event.
Council authorized staff to submit the application and to commit the required match. The resolution passed by voice vote.
Next steps: Staff will submit the grant application in August, continue community outreach and, if funded, advance engineering and construction planning for the three parks.
