Board approves sending Oakwood–South relocation plan to DPI, asks to return before parent notice

The Caswell County Board of Education voted on June 29 to send its Oakwood–South relocation plan to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for written feedback and to return to the board for final approval before parents are notified.
District staff presented a move plan that would temporarily relocate Oakwood Elementary students to South Elementary during renovation work. The presenter said South Elementary’s design capacity is 576; using current ADM figures and accounting for about 62 Oakwood students identified for placement at North Elementary (special needs and pre‑K), the projected population at South would be roughly 511 students, or about 89 percent of capacity. The plan assigns 17 classrooms to relocated grades, reserves shared spaces such as the cafeteria and media center, and repurposes several smaller rooms for administrative use.
Traffic and safety changes were central to the plan. Staff described a separated bus zone, a dedicated car‑rider drop‑off pattern intended to reduce conflicts, and a staging approach where buses will be released ahead of car riders to speed dismissal. The presenter said staff will coordinate cone placement, SRO support and additional central‑office staff on opening days to ensure safe traffic flow, and that communication materials (maps and talking points) will be distributed prior to the school year.
Board member Joel moved that the plan be submitted to DPI for written confirmation and that the board see DPI’s response before the plan is sent to parents. The motion passed. Board members also asked staff to return with a list of excess furniture and proposed disposition options (repair, reassign, scrap) at the next meeting.
No final parent notifications will be distributed until the board receives DPI’s written feedback and approves the final parent communications.
