Fruitport board approves wireless-device policy, PE credit change, new workplace course and a student reinstatement
Summary
The board approved a second reading of Policy 5209 (student use of wireless devices), allowed three PE courses to satisfy graduation PE requirements, approved a new Workplace & Internship Readiness course, and reinstated student 7197109203 for the 2026–2027 school year.
The Fruitport Community Schools Board on May 18 approved several Student Affairs Committee recommendations, each by unanimous vote.
Trustee Josh Mueller reported the Student Affairs Committee’s May 11 recommendations and the board approved the second reading of Board Policy 5209, Student Use of Wireless Communication Devices (Item 26-42). The motion was moved by Mueller and seconded by Tim Burgess and carried 7–0.
The board also approved a recommendation from the Instructional Council to allow General PE, Advanced PE or Lifetime PE to satisfy the physical education graduation requirement (Item 26-43). Trustee Mueller moved the item; Trustee Burgess seconded and the motion passed 7–0.
Separately, the board approved a new course, Workplace & Internship Readiness, to serve as a prerequisite for the district’s existing work-based learning course at Fruitport High School (Item 26-44). The board voted 7–0 to adopt the course recommendation.
Finally, the board adopted a reinstatement resolution for student 7197109203, approving the student’s return to Fruitport Community Schools effective with the first day of the 2026–2027 school year and allowing the student to be on school property beginning June 1, 2026 (Item 26-45). The motion passed on a roll-call vote, 7–0.
Trustees noted these items came from the Instructional Council and Student Affairs Committee deliberations and included review of a student behavior survey and personnel impacts from retirements and resignations that will affect staffing for 2026–2027.
