The Carlisle Area School District education committee reviewed a French 1 curriculum revision and a budgeted textbook proposal Thursday, with administrators and board members praising the developmental approach and planned purchase strategy.
Ali Moyer, presenting for the world language department, described the revision as aligned to ACTFL standards and emphasized early, meaningful language use for students. She said the text chosen functions more like a primer for beginners—akin to an early reader—rather than a traditional novel. “It translates to Brandon Brown Wants a Dog, and it's very much what you would imagine,” Moyer said, explaining the text's suitability for beginner language learners.
Moyer said the textbook is budgeted within the world language budget; the department plans to buy an initial 30 classroom copies to stretch resources across cohorts and add more copies in subsequent years as cohorts move through. The committee praised the emphasis on student engagement and on using materials that help students read and interact in the target language from the beginning.
Committee members also noted plans for future language program development, including French 2 and 3 revisions and possible language clubs. The education committee will forward the curriculum and accompanying texts to the full board for approval in a forthcoming meeting.
