Assumption Parish approves series of drainage repairs, greenlights $17,000 Verda Street project

The Assumption Parish Police Jury on June 10 approved a package of small drainage repairs and authorized a $17,000 project to address chronic drainage failures on Verda Street.
Chairman Jamie Ponville asked the committee to approve replacing a collapsed catch basin at 423 Maple Street at a cost of $1,750; Committee member Chris Carter moved the motion and Charles Breaux seconded it, and the jury adopted the motion unanimously. Ponville also requested and the jury approved installing a catch basin at 129 Alida Street for $1,750 and sweeping the outfall on Massey Lane for $700, work the Parish Manager said would address localized backups.
The jury also approved sweeping ditches and blowing out culverts along State Highway 1003. Committee member Chris Carter explained the ditches were overgrown and that the parish had previously agreed—verbally, according to the OHSEP Director—to assist with state right-of-way drainage when DOTD did not. Carter asked to add $1,000 for culvert blowouts, bringing the total to $2,200; the motion was adopted unanimously.
On Verda Street, the Parish Manager reported elevations and pipe sizes were creating a swell in the roadway and yard. He proposed replacing undersized 12-inch steel piping with 15-inch pipe and installing catch basins on the south side and correcting the middle, undersized segment on the north side. Committee member Myron Matherne moved to allow the Parish Manager to carry out the Verda Street drainage project at a total estimated cost of $17,000; the motion passed unanimously.
The meeting record shows at least one request was tabled for further review by ADA Michael Calabro because the work touches private property and may require right-of-way agreements or other approvals. The jury also approved a culvert replacement at 310 Bayou Tranquille and several Cooperative Endeavor Agreements to authorize limited driveway coverings where access to a main driveway was at issue.
The jury’s actions are intended to address immediate localized flooding and drainage flow issues; several items affecting state right-of-way and private-property work were either tabled pending legal review or assigned to the Parish Manager and ADA for follow-up.
