City manager, council members report on regional collaboration, elections and local projects

City Manager Roy Atkinson used the Aug. 1 meeting to remind council members about the upcoming primary election and to summarize recent regional and professional engagements.
Atkinson reported attending the Michigan Municipal Executives conference in Holland and noted legislative updates from the Michigan Municipal League. He said he presented to the Chelsea Rotary Club, toured the fire facility with Chief Arbini, met with 5 Healthy Towns partners about regional collaboration and recreational opportunities, and met with Washtenaw County representatives to discuss long-term planning and sustainability. Atkinson said staff are considering alternative options for waste pickup and that several city positions remain open.
During council reports, Mayor Pro-Tem Tony lannelli said the Human Rights Commission will meet to discuss a refugee resettlement program and flagged traffic and safety concerns on M-52 and Old US 12. Council Member Eric Keaton noted a canceled SRSLY meeting. Council Member Peter Feeney emphasized the nonpartisan nature of City Council. Bill Ruddock reported on school leadership transitions and Transition Team activities. Deputy Clerk Charles Wiseley welcomed Jamie Lane to the Zoning Board of Appeals and noted transportation-group discussion. Kate Mehuron recounted attending a Sharon Township Preservation Society panel and volunteering with the Zero Waste Coalition at the Sounds and Sights Festival. Mayor Jane Pacheco described meetings on affordable housing, park upgrades at Timber Town Park, and upcoming planning discussions.
A member of the public, Gaye Morgenthaler, had urged the council to consider staffing and council-rules matters during public comment; the minutes record her remarks but no formal Council action followed in the published minutes.
The council adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
