Bessemer council ratifies Aug. 25 municipal election notice, approves $250 donation

BESSEMER, Ala. — The Bessemer City Council on June 9 ratified the city’s Notice of Election for the 2026 municipal contests and approved a $250 donation from District One donated funds.
City Clerk Wanda D. Taylor presented Item No. 3 and City Attorney Aaron Killings read Resolution No. 665-26, which acknowledges and ratifies the municipal election scheduled for Aug. 25, 2026, and a runoff, if necessary, on Sept. 22, 2026. Killings read that the qualifying period for candidates was open and the notice would be entered into the official minutes. "declaring the qualifying period open for candidates seeking election in the 2026 City of Bessemer Municipal Election," Killings read.
Councilor Cleophus King moved to approve the resolution; Councilor Sarah B. Person seconded. The council recorded Ayes from Councilors Cleophus King, Sarah B. Person, Donna Thigpen, and Council President Jarvis Collier; there were no Nays. "The motion carried," the minutes state. The resolution directs the City Clerk to publish, post, and maintain the Notice of Election and authorizes municipal officials to take steps required by Chapter 46 of Title 11, Code of Alabama 1975, and other applicable law.
The council then considered Item No. 4, Resolution No. 666-26, authorizing a donation of $250 from the District One donated funds account of Councilor Jarvis Collier to the Mabel L. Chambers Endowment for community and educational programming. City Clerk Wanda D. Taylor presented the resolution, noting the donation would support local educational and charitable programs.
Councilor King moved to approve the donation; Councilor Person seconded. The council again voted unanimously in favor (Ayes: King, Person, Thigpen, Collier). The motion carried, authorizing the payment from donated funds to the Mabel L. Chambers Endowment.
With the two items concluded, Councilor King moved to adjourn; Council President Jarvis Collier adjourned the special meeting. The clerk recorded the action in the official minutes.
