Iowa City schools present screen‑time survey; board to form committee to recommend device and screen‑time guidelines
Summary
A district survey of staff and families found support for educational technology coupled with concerns about excessive screen time and nonacademic device use; Superintendent Degner recommended a staff-and-community committee to recommend evidence‑based, grade‑differentiated guidelines and possible changes to one‑to‑one device deployment.

Superintendent Matt Degner presented results of a district screen‑time survey June 23 and recommended forming a committee of staff and community members to develop evidence‑based guidelines and device‑deployment recommendations.
Survey results showed staff generally value instructional technology but favor clearer safeguards, stronger monitoring and targeted professional development; families most commonly supported school‑based access and more balanced screen‑time practices. Secondary teacher responses showed a wider range of Chromebook classroom time with some reporting one to three hours per week in class; parents flagged concerns about excessive screen time, distraction (YouTube, gaming) and inconsistent communication about monitoring tools.
Degner proposed a committee that would meet over the school year to recommend guidelines and a timeline, noting the committee should produce recommendations in time to inform next‑year practice. Board members discussed piloting building‑level changes (for example, limiting Chromebooks in the lunchroom), reconsidering the one‑to‑one device model at some levels, possible acquisitions of carts for middle schools, and the time and expense tradeoffs of alternative deployment models.
Several directors urged setting clear outcome goals and a multi‑year roadmap. The board did not adopt policy changes at the meeting but supported forming a committee to provide recommendations and asked staff to return with implementation ideas and potential pilot plans.
