Commissioner says Clear Lake Park needs more oversight; council declines appraisal for now

Commissioner Lynne Liechty told the Steuben County Council July 9 that the county owns roughly 1.62 acres of lakefront at Clear Lake plus another acre on the opposite side of a roadway, and that the county budgeted $4,500 annually for mowing and trash. Liechty said erosion has reduced beach access and commissioners want to explore options with the Town of Clear Lake and the Conservancy District before considering sale or transfer.
Council members expressed a preference to keep the site available as a public park and noted the county attorney verified the county could sell or gift the property. Jim Getz and Lynne Liechty volunteered to meet with the Town of Clear Lake to discuss options. Based on council consensus, President Richard Shipe stated no appraisal should be obtained at this time and further discussion should continue before any decision about sale or transfer.
The discussion was advisory and no formal disposition action was taken.
