The Plaquemines Parish School Board opened its June 3 meeting with an invocation by Ms. Marion Protida and a Pledge of Allegiance, then spent the largest portion of the meeting recognizing staff and students for academic and athletic honors.
Mr. Robbie Lee announced Amanda Granier, sales tax collector for Lafourche, as the Louisiana School Boards Association 'Friend of Public Education' award recipient for statewide service, including work on the state sales-tax filing portal and combined returns. "For all that you do in representing the institution very well, thank you Ms. Rhonda," Mr. Lee said in praise of Ms. Granier's statewide support role.
Dr. Rodriguez and other presenters recognized a long list of student winners from the Louisiana State Literary Rally and the LHSAA state track meet. Examples named at the meeting included Sawyer Terrio (first place, advanced math), Samir Valladares (first place, Spanish II), and track medalists Yair Torres Aguilar and Joshua Gideon. The board also recognized the South Plaquemines High School boys state champion track team and a second-place 4x800 relay team from Central Lafourche High School.
Presenters repeatedly thanked families, coaches and school staff for the students' accomplishments and said awards photos would be posted to the district's Facebook page. The awards portion concluded with presenters urging those attending to travel safely in rainy weather before the board moved to routine business.
The meeting then proceeded to minutes and consent items.
