Claiborne Parish committee hears facilities updates; sprinkler system ruled unaffordable

The Claiborne Parish School BoardC2s Buildings and Grounds Committee met Nov. 6 at Haynesville Elementary and heard a series of facilities and safety updates from the districtC2s maintenance supervisor. Roy Mardis, chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, asked the maintenance supervisor for a status report on completed and upcoming projects.
Mr. Guillory, the districtC2s maintenance supervisor, said heating systems across the district "have been checked and cleaned for the winter season," and that fencing has been ordered for the Homer football field as a wind screen. He also reported that renovations to the Haynesville Jr./Sr. High auditorium, overseen by architect Michael Walpole, have been completed and that work on beams and ceilings is scheduled to begin next week.
To address water intrusion, Mr. Guillory said concrete was poured behind Haynesville Jr./Sr. High to divert water from going underneath the building. He said the district plans to solicit bids in February and bring recommendations to the full board at the March meeting. On fire-suppression work, Mr. Guillory said, "the district cannot afford a dry sprinkler system at this time," indicating the district has not budgeted for that upgrade.
Board member William Maddox pressed on safety concerns about holes behind Haynesville Jr./Sr. High, asking whether they could be filled. Mr. Guillory replied that the water is coming from underground and "anything poured in it will wash out," and characterized remediation as a Town of Haynesville responsibility. Committee member Patricia Stevens raised several maintenance issues at Summerfield she said could present liability risks; Mr. Guillory said he addressed each issue and that school principals were being updated.
The committee recorded a motion to adjourn from David Nokes, seconded by William Maddox; the minutes show the meeting ended following the motion. The board plans to receive bids in February and expects to return to the full board in March with recommendations on major repairs and projects.
