Surf Internet halts work on areas flagged by residents; company pledges to remediate any private‑property impacts
Summary
Surf Internet told the commission it paused work after residents raised possible private‑property encroachments in Cedar Point Park. The company said it will locate conduits with mappable tape, verify plat maps with the county, and remediate any installations on private yards within an estimated three‑week timeframe.

Pat McCauley, representing Surf Internet, briefed the commission on construction activity and resident complaints. McCauley said Surf and its contractors met regularly with town utilities and that, to date, Surf had received about 16 resident complaints that were addressed. After a recent resident report, Surf identified possible conduit or equipment on private property in Cedar Point Park and stopped work in the affected area.
McCauley said Surf is coordinating directly with Troyer Group (engineering) and Lake County plat records to confirm right‑of‑way lines and expects to place locatable (mule) tape in conduit so the company can precisely locate its facilities. "If we do find out we have stuff on people's private property, it will 100% be remediated. It'll be taken care of. It'll be taken out. Their yard will be restored to its previous condition, if not better," McCauley said.
He estimated that, depending on the amount of work, removal and restoration could take about three weeks for the affected spots and said Surf will not resume intrusive work in disputed areas until the locations have been marked and a remediation plan agreed with staff. Surf also said it will assign a dedicated on‑site representative for Cedar Lake to improve communications.
Resident Doug Mach, who has received service, told the commission he was satisfied with Surf's responsiveness: "Their customer service is... amazing. They were here fixing it right away," he said.
Commissioners asked staff and Surf to provide updates within two weeks and directed Surf to coordinate with public safety and engineering staff on road repairs and restoration standards. No formal action was taken; the commission accepted the update and asked for follow‑up reporting.
