Art Show committee recommends Oct. 7 awards event; calls for jurors and earlier nomination deadline

The Art Show committee reported that it intends to hold the annual awards event at the Stage Door, part of Penobscot Theatre Company, and recommended moving the traditional Oct. 1 awards to Wednesday, Oct. 7, because that date fits venue availability and coincides usefully with the Sidewalk Arts Festival.

Committee members discussed jury composition and outreach, recommending a five-member jury that would include one commission representative; the committee debated whether the commission representative would vote. The committee also discussed using a past winner (Bangor Beautiful) as one juror and balancing disciplines (visual art, theater, music). Members agreed to circulate a spreadsheet of past nominees and jurors for outreach and to solicit juror names by email.

On nominations, commissioners reviewed the current Google form and concluded it needs only date updates for the 2026 cycle. They discussed adding minimal guidance or an anonymized example nomination to improve consistency — for example, to avoid single-sentence nominations and encourage fuller descriptions — and considered shifting the posting from mid-July to shortly after the July 4 holiday so jurors have more time. A commissioner estimated recent nomination counts at roughly 20–25 entries in recent years; the commission plans to post the updated form soon and to finalize juror outreach in July.
