Morrisville council debates event-participation rule; staff to soften language and return Sept. 23

Council deliberated at length on a proposed Town Council event participation rule that would set expectations for how council members are notified of and recognized at town and partner events.

Council Member Johnson, who originally requested the effort, said the goal is fairness: "It is important to have ... a place where future councils, future staff can reference and look to," she said, stressing that the intent is to ensure all members are treated equally and fully informed.

Several council members urged softer language to reflect that speaking is an opportunity, not a default requirement. Council Member Fender said not everyone can attend daytime events because of work commitments and suggested the town consider holding more events outside working hours to increase participation. Council Member Robas proposed exploring a rotating schedule for speakers at recurring events to distribute opportunities.

Staff told council they would soften the wording to emphasize an "opportunity" to speak in certain settings and would avoid dictating programming to third-party organizers such as the chamber for events the chamber runs independently. The revised language and any additional changes will be returned to council for possible action on Sept. 23, or for further discussion at a later meeting if members request additional time.
