Commission plans town-hall plaque and gate dedication, eyes September unveilings tied to Nutley's 250th

Members of the Nutley Historic Preservation Commission reported the town-hall plaque has been completed and delivered to public affairs and that a municipal staff member (Frank DeMeo) will pick it up and install it. Chair said the plaque was "sitting with Meredith Blank" in public affairs and that Frank now knows where it is and "he's gonna go pick it up".

The commission discussed placement (left corner of the building), verification of the design and timing for a formal unveiling. Several members recommended staging a formal dedication in September to coincide with other 250th activities but suggested spacing ceremonies so each receives attention. One commissioner said a separate dedication for the gates would be appropriate because of the planned activities there.

On marker text, members agreed to draft approximately 100 words for each marker and to hold the text as a draft until additional archival or outside expert research could confirm dates or ownership details. "Once it's cast" was cited as reason to delay final approval until the committee can verify historical facts, since a permanent plaque can be difficult to change.

Members also discussed coordinating publicity: some commissioners said the town's handling of 250th publicity had been inconsistent and urged a more visible, calendar-style outreach plan rather than relying entirely on email. One member called the town follow-through "disappointing," and others acknowledged scheduling challenges that compressed many events into late spring and early summer.

The commission noted a small budget for markers and dedications and proposed finalizing plans over the summer with formal events in the fall.

Next steps included confirming plaque placement and installer, drafting marker text for review, and planning dedications in coordination with municipal staff and parks and recreation if the Bridal/Vreeland House grant is awarded.
