Prevention Coalition asks Spencer council for donation, outlines programs

Jennie Douglas King, representing the Prevention Coalition, told the Spencer City Council on April 30 that the group is a community partnership and a 501(c)(3) that runs outreach events and a school art collaboration and visits female inmates at the county jail. She said the coalition has one employee whose salary is paid from VBC opioid abatement funds and that a state grant would allow hiring three additional full‑time staff. She invited council members to attend the coalition’s monthly meetings at the Ag Learning Center and asked whether the city would consider a donation.
Alderman Jill Bouldin called the coalition “an important asset to our community.” The council discussed the request but did not vote or direct staff to pursue a donation at the April meeting.
Because the Prevention Coalition is privately governed and the coalition’s funding status depends on grant awards, council members did not make a financial commitment during the meeting. The organization’s next steps, as described by King, are pursuing grant funding and continuing community events and partnerships.
