Rothschild adopts updated floodplain ordinance to meet DNR and FEMA requirements

The Village of Rothschild Village Board voted on Dec. 9 to replace the village’s existing floodplain zoning ordinance (Chapter 572) with an updated draft supplied by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and edited for local formatting.
Zoning Coordinator Rebekka Borchardt told the board several edits were needed to bring the village’s ordinance into compliance with federal FEMA rules, Wisconsin DNR regulations and participation requirements for the National Flood Insurance Program. Rather than amend the existing ordinance line by line, staff recommended removing the village’s current text and adopting the DNR‑supplied draft with local formatting changes.
The motion to amend Code of Ordinance Part III: Zoning Legislation, Chapter 572 Floodplain Zoning, as recommended was made by Dan Mortensen, seconded by Bill Schremp, and carried 7–0.
Why it matters: adopting the DNR‑reviewed language is intended to maintain the village’s compliance with state and federal floodplain management standards and preserve eligibility for the National Flood Insurance Program, which can affect property owners’ flood insurance availability and rates.
