Rothschild trustees authorize research and signage changes after roundabout close calls

Trustees in Rothschild told staff to pursue additional measures after reports of one confirmed crash and several close calls at a compact roundabout that opened in late November 2024.
Administrator of Public Works Timothy Vergara summarized complaints from residents and notes from the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department. Vergara said the existing signage meets and exceeds the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices but that the village added extra advisory signs at 600 feet and 150 feet from approaches, plus temporary warning flags. He described potential alternative median and control concepts and outlined general costs.
Trustee Rex Zemke and Trustee Sam Stroik moved and seconded a motion directing staff to research additional options, revisit the village speed-limit ordinance for potential reductions approaching the roundabout, and report back to the board. The motion carried 6-0.
The board did not set a schedule for follow-up at the meeting; staff will present researched options and any proposed ordinance changes at a future board session.
