County schedules COMET suicide-prevention training; committees discuss roadside spraying, animal-drawn vehicle ordinance and tourism push

Marquette County officials announced a slate of informational items and committee reports at the Oct. 21 County Board meeting.
Clinical Services Manager Dawn Woodard told the board that suicide rates have increased about 15% over the last decade and said rural residents face higher risks due to isolation; Woodard announced a joint Clinical Services and UW Extension COMET Training scheduled for Nov. 13 from 2:00'PM to 4:00'PM in the County Board Room and encouraged attendance.
Highway Committee Chair Mike Raddatz reported discussion of spot spraying along county and township roads to manage roadside vegetation. Judicial & Public Safety Chair Judi Nigbor said the Sheriff's Office and Corporation Counsel are looking into an Animal Drawn Vehicle Ordinance in response to complaints; she also noted the EMS budget has been forwarded to the Executive & Finance Committee after a second submission to Judicial & Public Safety.
Ad Hoc Tourism Chairperson Nigbor reported on a joint meeting with Economic Development and the Visitor's Bureau that focused on growing sales-tax revenue through tourism, a phase 2 business grant, more community events and a push for overnight stays; she noted social-media growth under new Tourism and Social Media Coordinator Brett Klawitter.
