The Pasadena Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to non-renew the employment contract of Melody Denise Burt following a closed-session hearing. Trustee Paola Gonzalez moved to non-renew the contract and authorized the superintendent to provide notice of the board’s action; Trustee Kenny Fernandez seconded. The motion carried and was recorded as a 5-0 vote.
The board had adjourned to closed session earlier in the evening under Texas Government Code Sections 551.071, 551.074 and 551.0821 to consider non-renewal hearings and related actions. After returning to open session around 11:10 p.m., the board announced its decision and told Ms. Burt that the board “has here heard the evidence presented tonight and has determined that your contract with the district should be non-renewed.”
The board said it will notify Ms. Burt in writing within 15 days. Under Texas Education Code section 21.209, she may appeal the board’s decision to the Commissioner of Education by filing within 20 days of the board’s written notice. The meeting adjourned at 11:12 p.m.
