Deep River committee advances three potential sites as firehouse design is refined

The Firehouse Building Committee met June 16 at the Deep River Firehouse to review an updated building program from design firm TSKP and to narrow potential sites for a new or renovated firehouse. Chairperson Zachary Machold opened the meeting at 6:01 PM.
TSKP presented adjustments to room sizes and overall square footage intended to reduce the building footprint and to address storage needs and locker locations for turnout gear. The committee discussed those proposed reductions and their implications for operational space and equipment storage.
TSKP also shared aerial views and initial assessments of multiple candidate properties. The firm identified constraints and considerations for each: the Deep River Market parcel is partly within the 100-year floodplain and contains wetlands; Pent Street has water service at the road end but limited access (a single access point and difficult connection to Main Street) and an asking price the meeting described as prohibitive; sites associated with Deep River Elementary School, Tri-Town Youth Services and Parks and Recreation were judged problematic because of existing occupancy, likely relocation costs and uncertainties tied to regionalization discussions. Fremut’s Service was noted as a property whose owner is open to discussion. The Historical Society property is being held pending the Historical Society’s response to the committee’s inquiry.
Following the review, the committee agreed that, pending the Historical Society’s reply, three sites will move forward for further evaluation: the Historical Society property, the Deep River Market property, and Fremut’s Service. TSKP will prepare an add service to test-fit additional alternative sites and is scheduled to present that work at the committee’s July 2, 2026 meeting.
Committee members also discussed procurement steps to support site evaluation, including issuing RFPs to study specific properties, though final decisions on RFP issuance were deferred for further discussion at the next meeting. The report of constraints (floodplain/wetlands, single access, relocation costs) framed the committee’s prioritization of sites for more detailed study.
No public comments were made during the meeting. The committee closed discussion on site evaluation with the next design update and the proposed test-fitting of additional alternatives scheduled for the July 2 meeting.
