Ali Ramsteck, Director of Human Services and the Mather Senior Center, told the Commission on Aging on June 17 that Darien Human Services began accepting applications for the Connecticut Renter's Rebate Program for calendar year 2025 and is offering appointment assistance through Sept. 10, 2026.
Ramsteck said the town is assisting older and disabled renters with submissions and scheduling appointments to manage demand during the application period. "Staff continue scheduling appointments throughout the application period to accommodate the increased demand experienced when the program first opens," she reported.
The commission outlined eligibility and documentation requirements: applicants (or a spouse) must be 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2025, or be disabled and collecting Social Security Disability; applicants must have been Connecticut renters with at least one year of Connecticut residency. Income limits given at the meeting are $46,300 for single applicants and $56,500 for married couples (for calendar-year 2025). Required documents include Form SSA-1099 for Social Security, proof of pensions/annuities, interest/dividends, wages (if applicable), a 2025 tax return if filed, and proof of rent and utilities for the months rented in 2025. The commission emphasized that bank statements listing payments are not acceptable proof of rent; landlords' receipts, canceled checks or a rent receipt are acceptable.
Residents seeking assistance should call Darien Human Services at 203-656-7328 to make an appointment. The Human Services office is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and the last day for appointments is Sept. 10, 2026.
The agenda item was a presentation and not a formal vote; staff encouraged eligible residents to apply and to bring complete documentation to appointments.
