Avery Morris, a presenter with Forth Mobility, told the White Salmon City Council the Gorge Rides E-Bike Lending Library will provide 30 e-bikes available for free checkout to Washington residents aged 18 and older, with checkouts ranging from two days to one month. The program is funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the state Climate Commitment Act, Morris said.
"Most bikes will be Aventon Level 3 step-through Class 2 e-bikes, with a maximum assisted speed of 20 miles per hour," Morris said. The fleet will also include cargo bikes capable of carrying a child or a second passenger, he added. Each checkout will include a helmet, a lock and a charger; additional accessories such as safety vests, child seats and pannier bags will be available as needed.
Varun Bather, also with Forth Mobility, said hubs will be located at Whitson Elementary, Daubenspeck Park and Skyline Health. Council members asked about bike types, safety measures, age requirements and community outreach; the presenters said the program will include in-person safety orientations and bilingual outreach in English and Spanish.
The presenters said a community information event will be held the following evening at the White Salmon Valley Library to introduce the program and demonstrate equipment. The council did not take formal action on the presentation; staff and presenters discussed outreach and safety planning during the meeting.
