Commission on Aging urges letters after failed budget referendum to preserve Senior Center staff FTE

Chair Dr. Eric Rosenberg told the Commission on Aging at its June 11 meeting that, following the failed budget referendum on June 2, the Tri‑Board (Board of Finance, Board of Education and Town Council) will review cuts and that commissioners and community members should contact finance board and council members to press for keeping a proposed Senior Center staff upgrade to a full‑time position.
"I recommend that each commissioner (and spread the word with neighbors and friends) write an email and send it to all of the Finance Board members, and Town Council members by Friday, 6/12, encouraging the town to keep their commitment to upgrading a part‑time employee to FTE of the SC," Dr. Rosenberg said.
The Commission noted that the Board of Finance will meet June 15 to approve and submit an amended budget. Jack Solomon, the Town Council liaison, joined the discussion and emphasized the need to finalize encumbrances and to identify which line items are negotiable before the Board of Finance meets.
Why it matters: the Senior Center provides meals, transportation and social services relied on by older residents; a staff reduction or loss of an intended FTE could affect program delivery. The Commission framed the request as a narrow personnel preservation effort tied to service continuity rather than a broader budgetary demand.
What’s next: Commissioners were asked to send emails by June 12 and Dr. Rosenberg and Vice‑Chair Cindy Craig said they would attend the Tri‑Board meeting that evening. The Board of Finance’s June 15 meeting was identified as the next formal decision point on the amended budget.
