District finance staff told the North Branford Board of Education on June 30 that the district has not received (or been credited for) some excess‑cost special‑education reimbursements from the town, leaving year‑end totals uncertain.
"I have reached out to the town manager on June 17 with the information he requested to substantiate our receipt of those funds," said Martha Law, director of personnel and business, during the finance report. "I have not had any response from him. To date there has been no funds credited to our general fund account." She said the district had credited the expected funds on its internal books and is running scenarios in case the town does not provide the reimbursements.
Board members said auditors focus on high‑cost special‑education placements and verify what the district reports it has received. Several members said they had provided the requested student‑level documentation weeks earlier and re‑sent it after the communications meeting but that town accounting had not confirmed receipt. One board member said the new town manager starts the following day and the board hoped the change would prompt quicker follow up.
District staff said the final close‑out finance report depends on a town response and that the business office will adjust journal entries if the town denies or credits the expected funds. Administrators emphasized they would continue to press the town for confirmation to avoid reopening audited records.
