Union City council agrees to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the Broadband Ready Communities process led by the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG).
Borough staff explained that adopting a resolution and holding a public meeting are required steps to qualify as a Broadband Ready Community and could streamline permitting and attract additional internet service providers. The program would designate EACOG as the borough’s Municipal Broadband Champion to assist with the application process.
Councilor Kerns moved to proceed with the public meeting and resolution; Councilor Joyce seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Council members noted that their current permitting rules are within the program’s recommendations and that the designation could expand options for residents seeking different ISPs.
