Supervisors discuss need to begin updating Del Norte County general plan and Local Coastal Program

County planning staff told the board that the Del Norte County General Plan is overdue for a comprehensive update; the Local Coastal Program has not been comprehensively updated since its certification in 1984 and the county is outside the 20‑year guideline normally used for plan updates.
The Director of Community Development (Heidi) said the office is beginning initial work on the safety element and recommended beginning pre‑planning within the next one to two years and identifying funding sources. Supervisors said integrating the LCP and the general plan ideally would occur together and noted that updating coastal policies could give the county more local authority on certain project approvals currently appealed to the state Coastal Commission.
Board members expressed concern about staffing, attrition and budgeting for a large, multi‑year effort and urged staff to prepare budget estimates ahead of the June budget cycle. A separate discussion flagged the scale of the Last Chance Grade transportation project and the need for strategic state and federal funding conversations.
