The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors approved two new extra‑help, part‑time job classifications for the Probation Department — a probation special investigator and program provider levels I–IV — saying the roles will provide operational flexibility for the Youth Opportunity Center and investigations work.
A county staff member (Lonnie) told the board the positions will help run programs, recruit facilitators and fill investigative and administrative gaps. After staff remarks, Amy Laffner, chapter president for SEIU Local 1021, said while the union recognizes the usefulness of extra‑help positions, she urged caution so full‑time jobs are not replaced by part‑time roles and asked the board to avoid “rubber‑stamping” such classifications without oversight.
Board members moved, seconded and voted to approve the classifications. Supervisors said the new roles will provide flexibility to support youth programming and background investigations; the motion passed with affirmative votes from board members present.
Amy Laffner’s public comment was recorded as a request for the county to ensure extra‑help positions do not become de facto replacements for full‑time staff; the transcript does not show additional protective measures adopted at the meeting.
