County engineer reports spring maintenance plans, equipment arrivals and budget pressure on painting program

Cerro Gordo County Engineer Brian briefed the Board of Supervisors on March 2 about preparations for spring roadwork, fleet updates and facility issues.
Brian said improving weather should allow crews to spend more time grading and repairing roads, but work depends on how dry surfaces become. The county received its contracted 750 tons of salt and refilled sand bunkers in case of spring weather events.
The county recently took delivery of a used mini excavator; staff confirmed its attachments fit the county’s existing smallest mini, meaning parts are interchangeable. Western Star has notified the county that a new chassis is available; the chassis will be sent to Christ Steel for installation of the box, a process the county estimates will take about three months.
Staff also identified four or five surplus pieces of equipment to send to auction and said higher-value items were palletized to meet auction thresholds. On a Rockwell-site property, updated pin locations showed two pins moved five feet; existing cold-storage and shop buildings sit at or near property lines. Asbestos testing for the cold-storage building was pending; the county may offer the structure to the sheriff’s office for training before demolition.
Brian also said a planned road-painting program budgeted at $100,000 came back with bids totaling $125,000. He said he will review the schedule and internal adjustments to try to retain key painting work and will provide a map of roads slated for painting. Brian said he will be absent at next week’s meeting and expects to send 'Spencer' or another representative in his place.
The board did not take further action on these operational updates during the meeting.
