Board signs onto Northern Indiana Workforce Board chief elected official agreement

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on June 30 approved a chief elected official agreement required by state and federal workforce statutes, joining other regional elected officials who sign the five-county Northern Indiana Workforce Board compact.
Tom Kavanagh, president and CEO of the Northern Indiana Workforce Board, explained the nonprofit’s role in administering federal and state workforce funds, helping residents with job search, training, credentials and employer connections. He said the board supported just under 700 St. Joseph County residents last year and invested “over three-quarters of a million dollars” in services; participants who received training left programs earning about $6 more per hour on average.
Kavanagh described outreach channels (word of mouth, unemployment insurance interactions and dislocation services after layoffs) and said business-service representatives work with employers to anticipate future hiring needs and align training programs, including connecting eligible individuals to IvyTech credential programs. Commissioners moved to approve the agreement.
