Port Clinton Tree Commission approves trim, denies four-tree removal and receives request for K-9 memorial tree

The Port Clinton Tree Commission met Jan. 14, 2025, and approved a tree-trimming request for 719 Madison St while denying a petition to remove four trees at 328 Adams St. The commission also heard a request from Port Clinton police to plant a memorial tree for recently deceased K-9 Officer "Spike."
Amy Pugh and Devin Woods of the Port Clinton Police Department asked the commission to approve a memorial tree to honor K-9 Officer Spike and his handler, Josh Nelson; the officers said the exact tree type and planting location will be decided later. The request was noted on the record but no planting specifics were set at the meeting.
Commissioner Larry Hohlman raised a concern about two trees removed from Adams Street Park that he said were not properly documented — the minutes indicate only one removal had been recorded. Paul Christman said he would investigate the apparent discrepancy and follow up with the commission.
Christman provided an updated listing of trees removed under the city grant and said Edwards Tree Service conducted removals, sometimes making executive decisions to remove hollow trees. He reported that 38 trees have been removed in the past month and said the city is in the process of hiring an urban forester to guide planning and replanting. "All Bradford Pear trees (invasive) would be removed and replaced as soon as possible with appropriate trees," Christman said, and he added there will be no stump grinding at this time.
Procedural business included two formal motions. Commissioner Jerry Tarolli moved, and Commissioner Lisa Bodi seconded, a motion to approve a tree trim at 719 Madison St; the commission approved the motion. Later, Tarolli moved to deny a request to remove four trees at 328 Adams St; Bodi seconded and the motion to deny the removal was approved. The minutes also note that a tree at 1719 E State St has been removed (the original request was filed Jan. 3, 2024) and that a Third Street tree assessed by Steph Miller was judged a "medium risk" and, according to Paul Christman, will not be removed.
There were no public comments. The commission scheduled its next meeting for Feb. 10, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Commissioner Larry Hohlman moved to adjourn at 5:30 p.m.; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Jerry Tarolli and the meeting ended.
