At its meeting the Park and Recreation Senior Citizen Advisory Committee added a leadership nomination item for the next meeting and heard staff reports about recreation programming and recent senior events.
Committee member Crawford moved that the committee select a chairperson and vice chair and recommended Mister Perez and Mister Fernandez for those roles; Mister Fernandez seconded the motion and staff recorded it as an action item to be considered at the next meeting. No formal vote on final appointments was taken during the meeting.
Staff provided an update on recreation programs including family portraits at the Casa de Salud Youth Center, basketball and yoga classes, and a December holiday event. Senior programs staff said recent senior activities drew roughly 70 participants and described two small grants that will go to council for approval: a $2,000 "No Senior Alone" outreach grant intended to pair crocheting seniors with home-delivered meal recipients and a roughly $2,500 grant for a walking/fitness program (described by staff as supporting the department’s "Walk With Ease" style programming).
Committee members emphasized consistent scheduling and promotion to increase participation and suggested using local radio and other outreach to publicize events. Members also asked staff to check a local news article that appeared to misstate a prior meeting’s support for a separate funding request and to correct any errors.
The committee scheduled its next regular meeting for Jan. 16 and said it expects to present or support items for the City Council meeting on Jan. 21 if the committee’s report is ready.
