Mapleton Local board adopts wide-ranging policy updates, including social media, attendance and foster-care guidance

ShaNa Benner, chair of the Mapleton Local School District Board of Education, called the Nov. 19 meeting to order and the board adopted a package of policy updates on second reading.

The board approved revisions and new policies covering board member compensation; treasurer incapacity; committee procedures; social media; evaluation of administrators; criminal-record checks; professional staff recruiting and positions; substitute teacher employment; academic acceleration, early entrance and early high‑school graduation; student absences and excuses; habitual truancy intervention strategies; CPR and AED training; children and youth in foster care; religious expression days; promotion and placement; interscholastic athletics; purchases; the school calendar; and a policy titled “Specific Beliefs, Affiliations, Ideals, or Principles Concerning Political Movements or Ideology.” Mindy Scurlock moved to adopt the policies and Vince Hartzler seconded; the board approved the motion unanimously.

Why this matters: the adopted policies touch personnel hiring and evaluation procedures, student attendance and academic acceleration criteria, health and safety training requirements, and formal guidance for students in foster care and religious‑expression days. These updates are administrative rules the district will apply to operations and student services going forward.

Board members offered no separate recorded debate on the policies in the minutes; the package was adopted as a single motion following the required second reading. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 9, 2024, at 4:30 p.m.
