Police report: rifles returned, evidence room plan and failing garage heater prompt quotes

Police Chief Chad Schlimm presented the department's year-end safety report and several operational items. He said four M16 rifles were shipped back to the Defense Logistics Agency in Anniston, Alabama, at a shipping cost of about $352 with tracking and insurance; the cost was reported as significantly less than driving the weapons to the DLA by vehicle.
Chief Schlimm said public-works supervisor Shawn Darr believes he can construct a new evidence room in the garage bay. The chief reported that the garage heater, manufactured in 1982, had not been producing heat though the pilot light and fan were operating; Zoned Comfort Heating and Cooling identified parts that would cost about $700. The department requested quotes for full replacement as a cost-comparison before deciding whether to repair the existing unit or purchase a new heater.
The chief also urged residents to check on elderly relatives and outdoor pets during the forecast cold spell and reminded the public to observe the village snow-parking ban when snowfall exceeds 3 inches. He said the department is researching en masse text-messaging systems to improve community alerts.
