Magnolia approves police chief's training request; department weighs constructing new evidence room after moisture issues

The Magnolia Village Council on Dec. 18 approved a request from Police Chief Chad Schlimm to attend the Ohio Police Chiefs annual in-service April 27–29, 2025, with an estimated total cost of $1,084 covering conference registration, lodging, meals and annual association dues. Grant Downes moved to approve the chief's attendance and Jim Miller seconded; Council voted unanimously in favor of the authorization (recorded as Res 2024-26).
Chief Schlimm also told council that the department's current evidence storage area is affected by moisture that has caused mold buildup. He described water intrusion into the basement and noted that if the water problem cannot be stopped, the department will seek quotes to construct a small enclosed evidence room in the garage bay using two existing walls and a door. Shawn reported staff will attempt to correct the water intrusion before construction is pursued; if construction proceeds, cameras will be repositioned into the new room.
Council did not set a construction budget or select a vendor at the meeting. The chief reported the department logged 179 paid hours this period and completed required CPT training for the year; no speed survey had been conducted this month.
