Medina honors speech-and-debate team and crowns a state wrestling champion

The district recognized student achievements in speech and debate and wrestling during the superintendent’s communications.

The board acknowledged Medina High School’s speech and debate team for earning national recognition from the National Speech and Debate Association and for strong results at the Ohio state tournament: students placed in both House and Senate events and the team received awards including excellence in debate and excellence in coaching. Coach Tiffany Nickel was singled out for coaching honors; junior Lincoln Marks introduced himself to the board and thanked teammates and coaches. "Programs like speech and debate are only continued to succeed when community members support them," Lincoln Marks said, and he requested volunteer judges and fundraising help to keep the program accessible.

Athletic director Todd Hotchkiss and coach Chad Gilmore recognized Cliff Nicholson as the district’s third state wrestling champion. The directors recounted Cliff’s semifinal comeback and last-second takedown that secured a 9–7 title match victory and noted two other wrestlers (Tegan and Dominic) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, contributing to a ninth-place Division I team finish. Coach Gilmore credited consistent bonus-point wins and community support.

The board applauded the students and coaches; the administration encouraged community attendance at upcoming showcases and local competitions.

Next steps: the speech and debate team will compete in national qualifiers and host a showcase at Medina High School in the coming months; wrestling participants will pursue collegiate opportunities and continue to represent the district.
